“On the cuff”來(lai)源(yuan)於(yu)酒(jiu)吧(ba)。二(er)十(shi)世(shi)紀(ji)早(zao)期(qi)的(de)酒(jiu)吧(ba)間(jian)裏(li)，男(nan)招(zhao)待(dai)穿(chuan)的(de)襯(chen)衣(yi)很(hen)特(te)殊(shu)，袖(xiu)口(kou)與(yu)袖(xiu)子(zi)是(shi)分(fen)開(kai)的(de)，袖(xiu)口(kou)很(hen)硬(ying)。如(ru)果(guo)有(you)客(ke)人(ren)要(yao)賒(she)賬(zhang)的(de)話(hua)，酒(jiu)吧(ba)招(zhao)待(dai)就(jiu)會(hui)把(ba)他(ta)們(men)賒(she)欠(qian)的(de)費(fei)用(yong)寫(xie)在(zai)袖(xiu)口(kou)上(shang)。

此外，“on the cuff”有時也可表示“免費的（地）”。
